The world we live in is permanently changing, evolving, technology has a lot to do with it, but some principles of life don’t really change and if we want to define initiative I guess the simplest place to start would be by describing it as someone’s action that begins a process without external influence.
the ability to use your judgment to make decisions and do things without needing to be told what to do, a bit like a self starter.
Initiative is very important and has a lot of relevant applications in day to day life, and the prime reason why I want to talk to you about it today is because I feel that initiative is an empowering quality to have as it places the ability to shift our emotional state firmly in our grasp.
Let me give you an example of what I mean.
In the work setting, you may be the employee that takes the initiative to come up with a new way of doing things, a new system, a new process, that could solve a long standing problem, and in the area of relationships or friendships, it’s quite possible that you maybe feeling on the periphery of a social circle or awkward about interacting or meeting new people, but I will never forget my grandmother saying to me Nigel, he that desires friends must first show himself to be friendly.
You see that gap or the missing link between having ability and using your ability is INITIATIVE!
So what can you do?
Always be prepared.
Tackle new skills and refine your abilities all the time. You learn and grow by challenging yourself.
You cant stand still.
People who do the things the way they have always been done will in the best case get the same results all over again.
One of the great God ideas is that if you want something, then give and it shall be given unto you.
If you are Waiting to be encouraged? Go encourage someone else.
Do you want to be exceptional? Then act exceptional.
Trying to do something extra all the time, thats called using your initiative.
